Historical and Political Personalities

Kerala is home to a number of renowned freedom fighters and political leaders who adorn important positions in the pages of Kerala history.

Among the great historical personalities are:
  • Marthanda Varma –After ascending the throne in 1729, Marthanda Varma battled against the Dutch and defeated them in the battle of Kulachal in 1741. The reign of Marthanda Varma is said to be the Golden age in Kerala history.

  • Swathi Thirunal – was the Maharaja of Travancore during the period 1829-1846. He encouraged Indian, Carnatic and Hindustani music. He established many impressive structures such as the Astronomical Observatory, Zoo, Museum, and Oriental manuscript library.

  • Sakthan Thampuran –The king who ruled over Kochi during 1751-1805 and was lauded by the people for his bravery and merciless attitude towards criminals. His rule marked the commencement of modern history in Thrissur.

  • Velu Thampi Dalawa –The prime minister of Travancore from 1801 to 1809; he was known for his bravery in fighting against British interventions in the state affairs. The Kundara Proclamation of 1809 is one of the landmarks in the period of Velu Thampi Dalawa.

  • Pazhassi Raja –The Lion of Kerala ruled the land of Kottayam in the early 17th century. He was noted for his efforts in leading Guerilla war against the British dominion over the land.

Kerala has witnessed important revolts like Vaikkom Satyagraha, Guruvayoor Satyagraha and Salt Satyagraha which strengthened the freedom movement throughout the state. Some of the political personalities such as K.Kelappan, K.P Kesava Menon, C.Rajagopalachari, T.M Varghese, and Pattom Thanu Pillai are notable names during this period.

The Communist Party of India was formed in 1939 and the state of Kerala was formed in the year 1956. Communist leaders like EMS Namboodiripad, AK Gopalan, and P. Krishna Pillai were in the first democratically elected Government. Some of the political personalities who always stay in the minds of people are Mannathu Padmanabhan, A.K. Gopalan, C. Achutha Menon, and E. K Nayanar. Among contemporary figures, C.Achutanandan, Chief Minister of Kerala and A.K.Antony, Defence Minister at the Centre are notable names.
